Musoma and Mwanza, Tanzania – ENCOUNTER

March 16 – 31, 2012

Karibu Sana Tanzania – Welcome to Tanzania!

They say that those who enter into mission fall into the dance of the living God. Indeed the rhythms of Africa are of dances. MKLM missioners in Tanzania will introduce us to this dance of life in the beautiful diverse Musoma and Mwanza. Tanzania is most known for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar for great beauty, picturesque scenery, and abundance of wildlife. We'll experience some of that. But our missioners experience Tanzania along with its people, with whom we will walk in our experience there.

Tanzania is one of the oldest known human-inhabited areas on Earth; fossil remains of humans and pre-human hominids have been found dating back over two million years. We know that humanity's first footsteps were taken in East Africa and since then the people of this region have navigated a long, rich, often arduous road. Musoma and Mwanza in Tanzania will serve as our home base as we visit East Africa. Maryknoll Lay Missioners will be our hosts and will guide us thru the varied cultures and traditions that make up the rich tapestry that is the Tanzanian culture.

Experiential Education:

The focus of the trip is meeting and making friends with Tanzanians and learning about their culture, faith, and history. The experience will showcase the ministries of Maryknoll Lay Missioners in Tanzania.

What Will You Do?

  1. Visits with Maryknoll lay missioners at their ministries: HIV/AIDS programs for widows, orphans and patients; visiting the homes of disabled children enrolled in a unique school and meet the students. Our missioners teach at all levels: primary, secondary, university, and Tanzanian religious sisters in their novitiate. We work with tutoring through our AIDS Outreach program.
  2. Visit with our Tanzanian Maryknoll Affiliates and experience their important work.
  3. Visit Tanzanians in the context of the daily routines of their lives, eating and celebrating with them to glimpse life through the window of their lived perspectives.
  4. Participate in local liturgical celebrations, experiencing the joy and hope of the Tanzanian faithful as it is uniquely expressed in song, dance, and jubilation.
  5. Experience wildlife in its natural environment on a safari in the Serengeti.
