Global Mission, Spirituality and Concerns

In the Maryknoll Lay Missioner membership covenant we say: “As members, we recognize that, we strive together for justice, peace, and fullness of life, and so our ministries are offered in response to the needs of the people with whom we live and work, and with respect for the integrity of all creation.”

An important part of our commitment as Maryknoll Lay Missioners is our dedication to BUILD and PRESERVE all human life and the life of our planet which sustains us. We commit to a vision of world of peace and justice in which we respect and honor all creation; where people treat each other and all creation with mutual respect and where there is "zero tolerance" to discrimination and to our brothers and sisters living in poverty. We understand this to be central to the vision of Jesus.

“Friends Across Borders invites people to undertake Jesus' mission to build life by encountering the poor, learning from them and understanding life from their perspective. As we do so, we'll discover the fulfillment we seek in our own lives. Friends Across Borders strives to promote and nurture people’s mission spirituality – that is, the way God connects with them. Friends Across Borders proposes that spiritual maturity must include a commitment to serve our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Friends Across Borders is based on the biblical tradition that this mission is “to the ends of the Earth”, and thus crosses all borders and boundaries which divides us, as the body of Christ. Friends Across Borders is an invitation to mission as well as an effort to build bridges between peoples. What are these bridges if not friendships?” (Steve Hicken, 2002)

Join Maryknoll Lay Missioners

Friends Across Borders invites you to become part of Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ Global Mission. Hear the Call! As baptized Catholics, we are called to mission. Maryknoll Lay Missioners (MKLM) offers U.S. Catholics the opportunity to respond to that call by serving the poor in Africa, Asia, or Latin America for 3-1/2 years or longer. Through MKLM you can give back from the skills and gifts you have been blessed with, and work for sustainable change in an overseas community, in yourself, and in our global church.Cambodian Girls weeding

We Maryknoll Lay Missioners are concerned about the earth reality and the global community. The Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns says “The resilience of the community of life and the well-being of humanity depend upon preserving a healthy biosphere with all its ecological systems, a rich variety of plants and animals, fertile soils, pure waters, and clean air. The global environment with its finite resources is a common concern of all peoples. The protection of Earth's vitality, diversity, and beauty is a sacred trust.

The Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns serves Maryknoll missioners by providing analysis and advocacy on justice and peace issues that affect the communities where Maryknoll Lay Missioners live and work. MOGC promotes lifestyles that are just and sustainable..
